ECIU members have secured funding for the new project, the ECIU University Entrepreneurial Campus (ECIU E-Campus), set to strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship capacity of the European University Alliances. The new project is funded through the EIT Higher Education Initiative (EIT HEI), and is closely connected to ECIU University activities. It builds on the alliance’s existing digital campus and challenge-based learning (CBL) model, advancing its mission to connect education, research and innovation at a European scale.
ECIU E-Campus aims to establish a structured, alliance-wide innovation development ecosystem, enabling learners to transform ideas generated in educational settings into viable ventures. It builds on ECIU University’s established CBL model, which already enables students and stakeholders to co-create solutions to real-world challenges. However, these solutions often remain within the educational context without a structured pathway towards market uptake. ECIU E-Campus responds directly to this gap by introducing a systematic innovation continuum and venture development. This ensures that ideas emerging from ECIU University Challenges, research activities and student initiatives are identified, validated and supported through staged development towards incubation and real-world application – thereby significantly increasing the societal and economic impact of CBL across the alliance.
At the core of the project is the integration of innovation and entrepreneurship education at scale. New learning modules will strengthen entrepreneurial competencies and support learners in progressing towards venture creation. Additionally, a dedicated venture-building pathway will guide high-potential teams through validation, coaching and entry into incubation programmes and industry ecosystems.

Connection to EIT objectives and EU-level priorities
ECIU E-Campus is closely aligned with European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) objectives, collaborates with Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs), including 28Digital. Through these partnerships, the project will connect learners with industry expertise, support research-to-market translation, and strengthen Europe’s innovation capacity.
The initiative also contributes directly to key EU-level priorities, such as the Union of Skills, digital transition and the Green Deal. It will support the development of entrepreneurial competences at scale through flexible learning formats and micro-credentials, while fostering solutions to challenges in digital transformation, sustainable development and advanced manufacturing.
Expected outcomes by 2028
The project brings together multiple ECIU members and partners, ensuring strong geographical and sectoral diversity. By embedding its structures into the alliance’s governance, curricula and digital infrastructure, ECIU E-Campus is designed for long-term sustainability and systemic impact beyond the project duration.
By 2028, ECIU E-Campus is expected to establish a fully operational venture creation pipeline, supporting international student teams through pre-incubation and enabling their transition into start-ups. Targeted outcomes include supported ventures and new partnerships with incubators, investors and innovation actors.
As one of the first European University Alliances established in 2019, ECIU University continues to pioneer innovative approaches to higher education – connecting students, researchers, businesses and communities to address real-life challenges. The ECIU E-Campus marks a new step in this journey, advancing the development of a European entrepreneurial ecosystem and reinforcing the role of universities in driving innovation and societal impact.
Project budget, timelines and partners
The ECIU University Entrepreneurial Campus (ECIU E-Campus) project is funded through the EIT Higher Education Initiative (EIT HEI) Call for Proposals 2025, Topic 2. The project will run for two years, starting in September 2026, with a budget of €2 million.
ECIU E-Campus is coordinated by the University of Trento, and all ECIU University member institutions are involved in the project.
