KTU and Riga Technical University Agree on Dual Doctoral Degrees

Important | 2026-10-28

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and Riga Technical University (RTU) have signed an agreement on the joint supervision of doctoral candidates under the international academic arrangement known as cotutelle. The agreement enables candidates to study at both universities and write a doctoral thesis under the supervision of researchers from each institution. Upon meeting both universities’ requirements, candidates will receive a doctoral degree diploma from each institution.

The agreement was signed on 22 October 2026 by KTU Rector Eugenijus Valatka and RTU Rector Tālis Juhna.

The framework establishes the main principles for jointly supervised doctoral studies. Under it, the universities will conclude individual agreements specifying each candidate’s study programme, research topic, supervisors, mobility arrangements, funding and thesis defence procedures.

The partnership combines the research expertise, infrastructure and academic environments of both universities, giving doctoral candidates international research experience and strengthening ties between the Baltic States’ technical universities. It also creates opportunities for academic exchange between researchers and future joint research initiatives.

“Joint doctoral studies bring together different research traditions, methods and approaches to addressing research questions. This allows candidates not only to deepen their knowledge but also to reassess their research questions and explore them from broader perspectives. Such experience is essential for developing independent researchers capable of working in an international research environment,” says KTU Vice-Rector for Research, Prof. Kęstutis Baltakys.

Candidates will be admitted to both universities and supervised by two scientific supervisors, one from KTU and one from RTU. During their doctoral studies, they will spend at least one academic year at the partner institution, engaging in its research activities, using its research infrastructure and participating in academic life.

Throughout their studies and the thesis defence process, candidates must comply with the academic and research requirements of both institutions.

The ten-year agreement establishes a joint framework for doctoral studies and lays the foundation for a lasting academic and research partnership between the universities.
