His Excellency Mr Toyoei Shigeeda, Japanese Ambassador in Lithuania visited Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) last week.

Meeting with the KTU Rector Petras Baršauskas was an important part of the Ambassador’s agenda in Kaunas. During the meeting, the Rector and the Ambassador were discussing ongoing collaborations and future possibilities.

KTU Rector has introduced the University’s study and research resources, has given a visual presentation of successful innovations conceived at KTU, the research achievements, and the University’s progress throughout the last years.

The Ambassador was highly impressed by the KTU Santaka Valley, a hub for research and science-intensive businesses, which stands as an equivalent of the Silicon Valley for the Baltics. Mr Shigeeda mentioned that he would certainly be interested in visiting the Valley during the next visit to Kaunas.

KTU is collaborating with Japan on various levels. One of the most outstanding and nationally important collaborations are Intensive Nuclear Engineering Seminars, which have been organised by KTU in collaboration with Hitachi and Tokyo Institute of Technology for several years.

Also, KTU nuclear energy master’s student Edgaras Šmigeskis has won the competition in international work placement programme (300 applicants for one place) Vulcanus in Japan and spent last year in the Land of the Rising Sun.
