Important | 2026-06-12

Recently, Lithuanian diplomats handling economic portfolios and special attachés visited M-Lab, the interdisciplinary prototyping centre at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). They had a unique opportunity to see firsthand how the ideas of Lithuanian scientists are transformed into global, competitive solutions.

“Geopolitical challenges are forcing us to rethink the role of universities. Today, higher education is becoming a direct factor in national security and economic resilience. This meeting confirms once again that KTU is not only shaping the science of the future but also developing real-world tools to ensure the state’s economic and technological security. The technologies emerging from KTU’s laboratories, spanning from cyber security to space industry solutions, demonstrate that Lithuania’s scientific potential is ready to compete on a global scale,” emphasised KTU Rector Prof. Dr Eugenijus Valatka.

The primary focus of the visit was directed at three areas of critical importance in today’s world: societal resilience, defence technologies, and dual-use innovations. Vice-Rector for Strategic Partnerships Prof Dr Edita Gimžauskienė, Head of the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre Dr Mindaugas Bulota, and KTU defence expert Dr Andrius Vilkauskas, presented KTU’s ambitious Societal Resilience and Defence Technology Programme.

The event highlighted that the research conducted at the University not only pushes the boundaries of science but also practically supports the strategic and diplomatic goals of our state. The diplomats had an exclusive opportunity to witness live breakthrough innovations being developed in KTU’s laboratories. Their strategic significance was unveiled by the innovators themselves, acclaimed university scientists and researchers whose innovative solutions reflect the synergy between science and innovation at the University.
Prof Dr Šarūnas Grigaliūnas and Assoc Prof Dr Rasa Brūzgienė presented breakthroughs in cyber security and quantum technologies; Prof Dr Mindaugas Žilys showcased cutting-edge electronic solutions for industry and defence; and Dr Artiom Magomedov shared insights into the application of perovskite solar cells in the development of space technologies.

Students from the Study@KTU Ambassadors programme also represented the University community.

Emphasising the importance of the visit, KTU Director of International Relations Dr Giedrė Šadeikaitė-Gjorsheski noted that this meeting is the result of long-standing and close cooperation between KTU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.

“Having such high-level representatives of the Lithuanian diplomatic corps from across the globe visit our University is an important recognition of KTU’s scientific potential and international visibility. Today, as the role of science, technology and innovation in promoting national progress and ensuring security is becoming increasingly significant, it is particularly important to strengthen education and science diplomacy, which helps present Lithuania’s expertise on the international stage and build strategic partnerships,” said Dr Šadeikaitė-Gjorsheski.

She underlined that, in KTU’s strategic outlook, internationalisation, scientific breakthroughs and cooperation with public and business partners are inseparable from the University’s contribution to the country’s competitiveness, resilience and the creation of high value-added innovations.

“We sincerely thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its trust, initiative and consistent cooperation,” said the Director of International Relations at KTU.
