Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) begins the election process of the new members of the Council. The University Council is a collegial governing body, which includes not only the representatives of the academic community but also the members of the public. On Monday, March 7, 2022, KTU announces the public competition for external candidates for the Council.

The Council is formed for a five-year term from eleven members – six internal and five external members, two of whom (one internal and one external) are elected and appointed by the KTU Students’ Union.

The councils of higher education institutions elect, appoint and dismiss the rector, approve the vision, mission and strategic plan, and perform other functions, such as restructuring, as indicated by the law of the Republic of Lithuania. A member of the Council can only be a person of impeccable reputation who has the knowledge and skills to help achieve the strategic goals of the higher education institution and fulfil the mission of the higher education institution.

The KTU Council elections process was initiated by the Chairman of the Senate of KTU on February 9, 2022. On February 21, following the Rector’s order a university electoral commission has been formed, which is responsible for organising and conducting the elections of the new University Council.

On March 7, 2022, the University Electoral Commission is announcing a public competition for external candidates for the KTU Council. External members of the Council are persons who are not members of the university staff and students (except for the persons who work or study at another higher education institution or are elected to the governing or self-governing bodies of other higher education institutions).

The external Council members are elected separately for each of the four positions according to the following areas of activity: high-tech industries; technology-intensive business; economic and/or financial administration; culture (arts), public sector.

The internal members of the Council are lecturers and researchers who hold positions through competition and apply to become members of the Council.

The five internal members of the KTU Council shall be elected from among the candidates in the following proportions for each of the five seats in the following areas of activity:

  • one member from the field of physical and biomedical engineering sciences and/or studies;
  • three members from the field of technology and/or studies;

Internal candidates to the University Council may be nominated by first-level academic units.
