Living the student life in Kaunas – is it that good for real?

Important | 2026-01-20

For many international students, choosing where to study is not only about a university or a degree. It is also about the city they will live in for several years. Today, more than 1,000 international students study at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). They have chosen Kaunas as their home.

This choice is shared by the wider international student community. According to a recent survey, 80 per cent of international students would recommend Kaunas as a place to live and study. Two of those perspectives belong to KTU students – Raees Mohammed and Gerson David Pinto Chica.

Raees Mohammed, a bachelor’s student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from India, has been living in Kaunas for three years. “What I like most about Kaunas are its parks, a lively city centre, and the people,” he says.

The city’s rhythm is what Gerson David Pinto Chica appreciates most about Kaunas. Originally from Colombia and raised in Tanzania, Gerson has lived in Kaunas for four and a half years.

After completing his bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, he stayed to pursue a master’s degree in Control Technologies and now works as an embedded software engineer.

Kaunas is the perfect mix of calm and exciting. It’s full of events, concerts, outdoor activities, summer camping, and cosy gatherings inside during winter.

Gerson also highlights the city’s cleanliness, history, and museums, especially the Kaunas Fortresses, which he explored together with his visiting family.

Both students recently took part in filming a promotional video about studying in Kaunas. For Raees, it was a completely new experience. “It was a huge leap in quality moving from Android phones to professional cameras,” he laughs, describing the process as fun and exciting. What stayed with him most was the professionalism of the production team. “Everyone knew what their part was – like a smooth machine,” says Raees.

Gerson, who had previous experience creating content as a KTU ambassador, says the filming still surprised him. “This was definitely on another level,” he notes. One of the most memorable moments was realising how much work goes into even a short scene. “I was really surprised by how many takes we needed just for one sentence,” laughs Gerson.

Their motivation to participate went beyond being in front of the camera. Raees says he never misses an opportunity to share how positive his experience in Kaunas has been. Gerson adds that attracting international students can be beneficial for the city itself: “It brings new professionals, new start-ups, potential unicorns, too”.

Asked whether a video can truly show what Kaunas is like, both agree that it captures the essence – but not the full picture. “It gives a short glimpse into how good Kaunas really can be,” Raees says, adding that the reality is even better.
