Important | 2025-11-21

According to the latest edition of the QS Sustainability Ranking, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is among the top 25% of the most sustainable universities worldwide. This is the fourth edition of the ranking, which evaluates how effectively universities contribute to the advancement of global sustainable development goals.

The QS Sustainability Ranking assesses universities across three key areas: environmental impact, social impact, and governance. This year, KTU strengthened its overall standing and is now positioned within the top quarter of institutions globally.

KTU ranks 509th in the 2025 edition of the QS Sustainability Ranking, marking its third consecutive year of steady improvement both globally and within Europe. In total, 2,002 universities were evaluated, including 330 newcomers. Among the three assessed categories, KTU performed strongest in Governance, placing 324th and becoming the highest-ranked university in Lithuania and the Baltic States in this category.

“This category evaluates organisational management: public decision-making, the development of a holistic and ethical organisational culture, student representation in governance, and financial transparency,” emphasises Agnė Latvelė, Project Manager at KTU’s Strategy Monitoring and Quality Department.

KTU also recorded its most significant year-on-year improvement in the Environmental Impact category, reaching 475th place. This area reflects universities’ contributions to environmental protection and climate science research, as well as their strategic efforts toward climate change mitigation and their graduates’ ability to advance sustainability.

The university also achieved strong results in environmental sustainability (401st place), as well as in the social impact sub-categories of health and well-being (510th place) and educational impact (550th place).

At the European level, KTU ranks 220th out of 621 evaluated higher education institutions, 96th among 187 institutions in Northern Europe, and 2nd among Lithuanian universities included in the ranking. Lithuania is also among the countries showing the largest percentage improvement since the ranking was launched – alongside Belgium, Finland and the United Kingdom – demonstrating consistent progress over the past four years.
