KTU Community Welcomes Exchange Students from Nearly 20 Countries Across Continents

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) welcomes the spring semester with nearly 150 new international exchange students – interest from Asia is growing, and a record number of students are extending their studies.

From 28–30 January, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) officially welcomed almost 150 newly arrived exchange students with the orientation week programme “Welcome Week Spring ’26 | Start Your Global Network”.

The spring semester of 2026 stands out not only for its geographical diversity – students have arrived from more than 20 countries worldwide – but also for the growing trust of leading Asian universities. Another notable trend is emerging: students are increasingly choosing to extend their studies at KTU.

Students Value Experience and Choose to Stay for Another Semester

This semester, the University community is joined by students from France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and many other regions. According to Dr Giedrė Šadeikaitė-Gjorsheski, Director of International Relations at KTU, this level of engagement is the result of consistent, long-term work.

“Internationalisation is a strategic, long-term priority at KTU. The fact that we welcome such a large and diverse group of students from different continents even in the spring semester confirms our university’s attractiveness and competitiveness in the global academic arena. It also reflects our focused efforts to strengthen international visibility. We are creating an environment where intercultural dialogue and global perspectives are an integral part of both studies and everyday university life,” says Dr Šadeikaitė-Gjorsheski.

One of the most notable developments this season is the high number of students who arrived at KTU for the autumn semester and decided to extend their studies.

Gintarė Vilbikienė, Head of the Academic Mobility Division and Erasmus+ Institutional Coordinator, notes that this is the strongest possible endorsement of study quality.

“When students choose to stay at KTU for another semester, it is the highest recognition of our work. It shows that they find not only a high academic standard here, but also a supportive social environment where they feel valued and motivated. Our goal is to ensure that every incoming student feels the full support of the KTU community,” says Vilbikienė.

Exchange Students Arrive from Leading Partner Universities

The spring semester of 2026 is marked by particularly strong engagement from partners in Asia. KTU labs and classrooms will welcome students from prestigious institutions such as Yonsei University, Seoul National University of Science and Technology in South Korea, and National Taiwan University.

Monika Kačenauskienė, Incoming Student Mobility Specialist and organiser of the orientation week events, emphasises that these partnerships enrich the entire university ecosystem: “We are seeing exceptional interest from the Asian region, especially from South Korea and Japan. Such cultural and academic diversity encourages the generation of new ideas, innovative research and joint projects, enabling us to grow as a global centre of science.”

“KTU appeared to me as a very advanced university, and Kaunas as a cosy, student-friendly city immediately caught my attention,” says Peteris Visy, a mechanical engineering student at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, who was looking for a contemporary and innovative university for his exchange studies. Keen to experience studying in Northern Europe, he was impressed by KTU from the very start.

During the orientation week, representatives of the KTU community, the Kaunas IN agency team, and representatives of international organisations discussed ways to integrate more smoothly into the new environment and build new connections. Significant attention was also given to new community members by full-degree KTU students, Study@KTU Ambassadors, and participants of the KTU Exchange Counsellor programme, who themselves have experienced studying abroad.

The KTU Welcome Week Spring ’26 orientation programme helped students integrate smoothly into life in Kaunas and at the University. Alongside learning about academic regulations, students took part in intercultural events and activities organised by student organisations.
