Fresh out of KTU: two different journeys to the same destination

Important | 2025-04-07

Coming from different corners of the world, Azerbaijan and Nigeria, Aysu Azimzade and Chimdimma Godfrey Iregbu found themselves in the same city, at the same university, and even studying the same programme: Public Policy and Security at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). What united them was a shared interest in understanding how systems work, how laws are made, and how policy shapes societies.

When talking about choosing a study destination, Aysu highlights that she wasn’t looking for a specific university but searching for a programme instead. “When I found an exact match of what I had imagined at KTU, I applied – and got in,” says Aysu.

Chimdimma, who has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, has always been curious about how laws and societies function. “I’m very inquisitive by nature and I’ve always wanted to understand the reasons behind laws and regulations,” he says.

That curiosity, shaped during his undergraduate studies, led him to look for a master’s programme in public policy – ideally in Europe, and in English.

While exploring his options, he focused on countries that offered relevant programmes without a language barrier. Lithuania quickly stood out. “From my research, Lithuania was the lead and from there, I chose KTU.”

Their experiences in Kaunas were shaped not only by the academic side of things but also by the everyday life in Lithuania. For both, the city quickly began to feel like home. “At first, it was a bit challenging – it’s a rather local minded place. But I really like Kaunas, it’s cosy, and very comfortable for international students,” says Aysu, KTU student from Azerbaijan.

Chimdimma agrees: “Kaunas is peaceful, quiet, and people here are friendly. I felt at home,” he says. One of his first memories? Landing in Vilnius airport and seeing snow for the first time. “That was new for me,” he smiles.

At KTU, both students appreciated the support systems available to international students. Aysu mentions that she received mentorship from the university while searching for job opportunities: “My mentor helped me tailor my CV and look for jobs”.

To better integrate, she also started learning Lithuanian during her first semester – and plans to continue her language studies if she stays here.

Although their paths were different, both Aysu and Chimdimma are leaving KTU with more than just a diploma – they are taking valuable experience, new perspectives, and meaningful connections.

Dreaming about inspiring studies? Consider Kaunas, the most student-focused city in Lithuania. KTU offers 27 Bachelor’s and 32 Master’s programmes in English. Choose your path and apply by the end of May 2025.
