“Fashion today is not just about aesthetics. It’s about solving problems, improving user experience, and creating responsible designs for the future,” says Jannatul Ferdous from Bangladesh, a recent Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) graduate whose decision to study Fashion Innovation Technologies brought her to Lithuania.
Jannatul had been interested in fashion design for a long time, but when deciding on her studies, she was looking for something that would go beyond a traditional design path. When she discovered this study programme, it immediately felt like the right fit.
Where Imagination Meets Engineering
“It combines creativity with technology, which is exactly the direction in which the fashion industry is moving,” Jannatul explains.
What attracted her most was the chance to explore areas that are becoming increasingly important in fashion today – sustainability, new materials, and digital tools. Instead of focusing only on the final result, the programme encouraged students to look at the whole process and think about how design is created and used.
“Each task challenged me to approach everything from different angles and come up with creative solutions,” she adds.
Working on hands-on projects and using state-of-the-art laboratories allowed her to test ideas and experiment with different solutions. She especially appreciated the balance between creative thinking and technical knowledge. “It’s a space where imagination meets engineering,” says Jannatul.
She also highlights the international environment as an important part of her experience. Working with students from different countries helped her see how different perspectives influence the design process. “Meeting people from different countries and learning from them made my experience richer and more meaningful,” says Jannatul.
A Dream of Studying in Europe Came True
“I had always dreamed of studying for my master’s degree in Europe, and when I finally arrived in Lithuania, it felt like that dream was becoming real,” she says.
At first, everything felt new, but over time, Kaunas became a familiar place. She got used to the daily rhythm, found it easy to build a routine, and started to appreciate simple things – such as quiet streets, nature, and the changing seasons.
“It’s a peaceful, clean, and student-friendly city with a strong sense of culture. Kaunas changed from being a new city in a new country to a place that felt like home,” she reflects.
If she were to leave, Jannatul says she would miss this sense of calm and balance the most. “I would miss the peaceful streets, the friendly faces, the comfort of my daily routine, and the feeling that Kaunas gave me a second home where I grew, learned, and discovered a new version of myself,” she says.
Looking ahead, Jannatul plans to return to Bangladesh and spend time with her family before making further decisions. “My first priority is to return to my home country and spend some time with my family after completing my studies,” says KTU graduate.
She is considering continuing her studies with a PhD in a field related to design, innovation, or sustainability, and is also open to job opportunities connected to her field – in Lithuania, in Bangladesh, or elsewhere. “I want to take things step by step,” she adds.
