On 13 January 1991 people of Lithuania said boldly to the whole world: we are free and we will always protect our birth right to be the citizens of our own land. Celebrating the Freedom Defenders’ Day, everyone is invited to remember the events of that night from today’s perspective, and to honour the memory of people who gave their life for Freedom.
Professor Vytautas Landsbergis the Leader of the Supreme Council of Lithuania at those turbulent times says that young people today not always can see the value of freedom. Today’s generation is not living under the soviet regime, and cannot compare living in the free society with that experience.
“The forms of control and restraint which were for so long imposed on us, our nation, our State and our people were so obviously alien to us. The all nation wanted to live differently, we were all tired of constant persecutions, suspicions, prohibitions. The young people of that day were participating in all the events, bravely defending our right to live differently”, says Landsbergis.
Yesterday Professor Landsbergis visited KTU, where he participated in the discussion organised for the commemoration of the 13 January.
Tonight the cycle of events continues with the 8 pm discussion “The Proud Homeland”, where KTU graduate Robertas Gradauskas, who fought for Lithuanian Freedom on 13 January 1991 will share his memories. Moderator of the discussion is Ainius Lašas, Dean of Kaunas University of Technology Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.
Later on the acoustic concert of Aistė Smilgevičiūtė and the musical band “Skylė” will take place.
The events will take place at KTU Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Studentų str. 50).
