A five week long KTU dormitory sports competition Barakiada’16 will start in the beginning of February. All 12 University‘s dormitories take part in this competition and are competing for the main prize, which is being passed on from the previous winners.
Barakiada is a social event to promote physical activities and to build the sense of community among the dormitory residents. Competitions will be held in 14 types of sport. This year a variety of sports will also include cricket, hockey, dodgeball and rowing.
The participants of Barakiada do not need to be professionals – everyone has a chance to try something new, to meet new people and to have a great time. The opening ceremony of Barakiada’16 will be held on 8th of February at the Sports Hall of the Faculty of Chemical Technology. During the procession all the dormitories’ teams will join previous Barakiada winners. Procession will be finished with lighting of the torch and a basketball match.
The closing ceremony will be held on 24 March. During the official part of the ceremony the previous winners will hand-over the main trophy to the new winners, and the dormitory teams from all sports will be awarded. The ceremony will be finished by a concert.
Last year almost 500 dormitory residents took part in the Barakiada competition, and the sport events attracted more than 2 thousand viewers. The organisers are excited to notice the growing enthusiasm of international students as more and more of them are participating in the university’s social life, taking part in organising various events. Last year around 5-6 international students’ teams participated in Barakiada, and it is expected that even more will join in this year.
