Watch Hamlet in English at Kaunas National Drama Theatre

Important | 2017-05-03

Hamlet, one of the most famous productions of the National Kaunas Drama Theatre, directed by Vidas Bareikis, will be shown on the main stage of the Theatre with English translation on Friday, 12 May. The translation is being provided by Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) teacher Dainora Maumevičienė, and technical translation students.

All the English speaking residents and Kaunas city guests are invited to enjoy the play by one of the most innovative Lithuanian directors.

Hamlet’s personality in Vidas Bareikis play is neither that of a romantic hero nor of an idealist – he is just a man seeking for truth. Hamlet’s feelings are real, ranging from love and hectic revenge to mourning, rage and desperation. All the emotions expressed by character on the stage, create a real human being with all possible colours and shades of personality. Perhaps that is the reason why the play feels so relevant even after hundreds of years.

Hamlet is a part of Bareikis’ initiative “Theatre in the Theatre”, which treats theatre like a shining light that helps to see what is hidden behind shadows, helps to reveal the author’s intentions, his dualistic personality, existential dilemmas and everything what happens in or outside the theatre. Hamlet thinks of the theatre as the last institution of justice and raises the question: why are we so influenced by our environment? Can our lives be more meaningful? What does duty mean? Why just a few of us have the courage to break the boundaries of limitation?

The play will take place at the Main Hall of the National Kaunas Drama Theatre.

Duration of the play: 3 hours 30 minutes
