Luisa María, a fresh-out-of-KTU graduate: Yes, I’m Latina

“I have been passionate about sustainability since I was 14 or so,” says Luisa María Santofimio Varón from Bogotá in Colombia. This year, Luisa María graduated from Sustainable Management and Production at KTU, a study programme, which, she hopes, will help her achieve her goals.

She says that Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) chose her, not the other way around. “It was not my first option, to be honest, but I liked the programme, and it was the most affordable option as well,” admits Luisa María. “I chose master’s studies here because the programme was exactly what I was looking for.”

Hailing from a city over 10,000 kilometres away, a proud Colombian (“I have two names and surnames – yes, I’m Latina”) says that Kaunas has always seemed a very cosy and peaceful place to her.

“Now, it has a special place in my heart,” admits Luisa María.

She appreciates all the possibilities the University provided her with, such as participating in courses organised by ECIU and the Baltic University Programme. However, Luisa María feels that the University community would benefit from integrating more international students into various activities.

Although the fresh-out-of-university KTU graduate from Colombia says that she might consider a PhD in the future, now she would prefer to focus on her career. If possible, here, in Lithuania.

“I’m already familiar with the country, and I have also built a community here. Won’t come back to Colombia for a while, as I want to explore more around here and in Europe,” says Luisa María, a fresh graduate of KTU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Design.
