Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is ranked 251-300 in the prestigious Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017, issued today. KTU is one of the only two Lithuanian universities in the Rankings.
“It is no easy task to appear in the 2017 BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings, which use the same 13 rigorous and demanding performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings. Institutions must demonstrate high standards of performance across teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer and compete with other leading research universities across 50 emerging economy countries. We only rank the very best universities from this cohort so to make the top 300 list is a great achievement in itself and Kaunas University of Technology should be heartily congratulated”, Phil Baty, Editor of THE World University Rankings said.
Institutions from the 50 countries classified as emerging economies (advanced and secondary) or “frontier economies” by FTSE were being considered. But institutions from only 41 of these countries made the final top 300 list. So your institution’s place in this ranking of the best research-led universities in the developing world is a significant achievement. Last year the only institution from Lithuania, Vilnius University, made it to the Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings on the 116 place (this year VU is ranked 125).
“The appearance of Kaunas University of Technology in the international rankings increases its international visibility. We are pleased to see that our University is approaching its ultimate goal – to become a leader in the Baltic and Eastern European region”, said Evelina Meilienė, KTU Strategic Planning Director.
The Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings uses the same 13 rigorous performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, examining each university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. But the methodology has been carefully recalibrated to better reflect the characteristics and development priorities of universities in developing economies. More weight is given, for example, to a university’s industry links and international outlook. KTU was ranked highest according to the knowledge transfer criteria and lowest – on the citations criteria.
China has the highest number (52) of institutions in THE Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings, as well as the best – Peking University – leading the Rankings. Both Latvia and Estonia have 2 universities in the Rankings. Poland is leading among our neighbours with 9 universities in the Rankings and the University of Warsaw ranked 78.
