KTU leads in growth: first-year student intake rises by 18%

Important | 2025-08-27

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) has recorded the fastest growth among Lithuanian universities this year. More than 2,900 first-year students will join the KTU community this autumn – an 18% increase compared to last year. The rise spans bachelor’s, master’s, and professional pedagogy programmes, with international student numbers also on the upswing.

According to KTU’s Vice-Rector for Education, Dr Kristina Ukvalbergienė, this year’s admission results reveal not only a growing interest in KTU but also broader trends in Lithuanian higher education.

“More and more young people are choosing to study engineering and technology, which directly responds to the needs of the job market. The growing interest in pedagogy studies is particularly encouraging, as there is a greater shortage of teachers in the education system today than ever before,” says Dr Ukvalbergienė.

First choice for most enrolled

This year, more than 1,600 first-year students were admitted to undergraduate and integrated degree programmes, representing a 22% increase on last year. KTU offered 1,232 places to first-year students on state funding, which is a 12% increase from last year. KTU is ranked second among universities for the number of state-funded places.

For several consecutive years, KTU has consistently ranked as the top university for first-choice admissions submitted on the national admissions platform. This year, an impressive 80% of those invited pointed out KTU as their first choice. A total of 494 students took advantage of the early admission opportunity for native students and signed contracts during this stage.

“These results reveal that KTU is a place where young people see the most prospects for their future, which motivates them to continue their studies. KTU ranks second among universities in terms of the number of contracts signed (excluding specialised academies), with as many as 92% of those invited signing contracts,” says the KTU’s Vice-Rector for Education.

Top achievers choose KTU

This year, 525 top-achieving students chose the university – nearly 36% of all admitted. Among them are seven graduates with outstanding results, including three who earned six perfect scores and four who achieved five. (In Lithuania, final school-leaving exams are graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 considered a perfect score.)

“Such achievements testify not only to their abilities and perseverance, but also to the fact that these talented people trust the university as a place where they can continue to improve. This trust is a testament to our community, which creates an inspiring environment for learning and growth every day,” says Dr Ukvalbergienė.

The most popular bachelor’s degree programmes’ choices are similar to those of previous years; however, the popularity of the programmes in Finance, Civil Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Multimedia Technologies and Artificial Intelligence has grown. Most first-year students were admitted to Software Systems, Civil Engineering and Informatics Engineering. Software Systems and Civil Engineering were among the ten most popular study programmes in Lithuania.

The geography of international students expands

More international students than ever before chose KTU this year. It is expected that over 400 students from a variety of countries will begin studying alongside Lithuanian students. The majority of these students are from India, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Morocco and Ukraine.

There has also been a noticeable increase in the number of students from European and Southeast Asian countries, as well as from Georgia, Sri Lanka and the United States. The first students from countries such as New Zealand, the Maldives, Jamaica and Puerto Rico have also arrived.

“The geography of countries from which students come is expanding every year. Lithuania is becoming increasingly attractive to the international academic community. Such diversity enriches the university, promotes cultural dialogue and allows students to study in a global environment,” says Ukvalbergienė.

More master’s and pedagogy students enrolled

Not only has student enrolment grown in bachelor’s programmes, but it has also grown in master’s programmes, which received 15% more applicants than last year, including international students.

“Among the most popular master’s degree choices are Public Administration, Electrical Power Engineering, Entreprise Management, Management, Structural and Building Products Engineering, Digital Transformation and System Architectures, and Artificial Intelligence in Computer Science,” says Dr Ukvalbergienė.

Significant growth has also been observed in professional pedagogy studies. One hundred students were admitted, which is 61% more than in the last year.

According to the KTU Vice-Rector for Education, this year the university offered two types of professional studies: one-year pedagogy studies, which provide a teaching qualification, and two-year subject pedagogy studies, which provide a teaching qualification and additional subject-specific competences.

“Although most applicants chose the one-year programme, we also accepted five physics, five computer science and nine mathematics teachers. These areas are particularly important for schools, which need qualified teachers, so their decision to become teachers is in line with the interests of the state. I am convinced that the decision to enable teachers to obtain a second subject qualification will prove successful and create long-term added value for the Lithuanian education system,” emphasises Dr Ukvalbergienė.
