Lithuanian universities taking a step towards consolidating research potential in transport engineering field – this September a joint PhD programme in transport engineering is being launched. The programme will be implemented by Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), Aleksandras Stulginskis University (ASU) and Klaipėda University (KU).
“Transport system is one of the most important factors, influencing success of the state, its economic progress and growth in European and global context”, says Laurencas Raslavicius, Vice-Dean for Research at KTU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Design.
According to him, in order to ensure effective functioning of transport system, researchers, theoreticians, business and industry professional must collaborate and develop their competencies and knowledge together. Lithuanian higher education institutions are carrying out transport engineering research and innovations related to various topics in the field, ranging from transport politics to traffic management and safety.
Leonas Balaševičius, Head of International PhD School at KTU says that the joint PhD programme opens diverse possibilities for its students to use the existing partnerships of all the participating institutions for research, study and research exchange and research-business collaborations.
“When several institutions are participating in preparing and delivering a PhD programme, the thematic research field expands, more researchers with varied competencies can join the process, more foreign partners and lecturers can participate in joint projects, the number of social partners increases”, says Raslavičius.
KTU will contribute to the PhD studies adding the research and studies competencies in the fields of defence systems dynamics, transportation means development, transportation system analysis, aircraft construction mechanics.
Among the overseas KTU partners are Angers University (France), Uppsala and Halmstad universities (Sweden), Akron university (USA). KTU closely collaborates with higher education institutions of the Baltic countries, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus.
The PhD students are being taught by experts from Italian, French, the US universities, the international conferences hosted by KTU invite speakers from international organisations, such as NASA Ames Research Centre, and others.
