Freedom is never simply given – it is earned, protected, and passed on. Each year on March 11, Lithuania pauses to remember one of the most defining moments in its modern history – the signing of the Act of Restoration of Independence in 1990, which marked the beginning of the nation’s courageous break from Soviet occupation.
It was not an easy path, but it was one walked with determination, unity, and an unshakeable belief in the right to self-determination.
This year, Kaunas invites everyone to be part of the celebrations. From 9:30 to 14:30, a military technology exhibition at Vienybės Square, where visitors can get up close with modern Lithuanian Armed Forces and allied equipment, including infantry fighting vehicles, self-propelled howitzers, and armoured vehicles, will take place. At 11:30, the Vytautas the Great War Museum Garden will come alive with a concert, featuring soprano, baritone, and carillon performances. The main commemorative ceremony at noon will include the raising of the Order of the Cross of Vytis flag, flower-laying, and the solemn oath of young riflemen. This will be followed at 12:50 by a festive concert.
Throughout the afternoon, visitors can enjoy creative workshops for children, a guided tour of the Maironis Museum dedicated to Lithuania’s great patriotic poet (registration required), and folk dance performances. Several of Kaunas’ most beloved museums – including the Vytautas the Great War Museum, Kaunas IX Fort, Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum, the Lithuanian Education Museum, and Kaunas Castle – will offer free admission throughout the day. On this meaningful day, we extend warm wishes to all Lithuanians at home and abroad, international friends, and everyone who holds the idea of freedom dear. Happy Birthday, Lithuania!
