Dmytro Kashyn, a third-year student of Communication Studies and Information Management Technologies has recently completed his second Erasmus+ academic exchange. This time, his destination was the University of Nicosia in the sun-drenched Cyprus.
No stranger to international experiences, Dmytro had already participated in an Erasmus+ exchange at the University of Navarra in Spain. However, his thirst for new adventures and academic challenges drove him to seek out yet another enriching experience.
In Cyprus, being multicultural is second nature
During his time at the University of Nicosia, Dmytro noticed differences between his studies there and his experiences at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in Lithuania. The KTU communications student explained that in Cyprus, each module concluded with the presentation of a semester-long project. While he appreciated the charismatic teaching style and overall experience in Cyprus, Dmytro admitted: “Studying at KTU was slightly easier.”
Among his favourite courses were Graphic Design (logo modelling) and Multimedia (object animation), which introduced him to assignments he hadn’t encountered before. During his exchange, Dmytro also actively participated in various events and made friends with like-minded peers. However, he couldn’t help but compare this exchange with his previous one in Spain, where the programme offered a wider variety of activities for exploring the region.
Living in Cyprus gave Dmytro a unique perspective on its diverse and multicultural environment. He noted how seamlessly the island blended different cultures, where English is widely spoken, and residents are friendly. “I did not see any special differences, as all the people are friendly and quite kind, just like in Lithuania and my home country,” shared a KTU student from Ukraine.
Plans working in marketing in future
Despite the city’s charm, Dmytro pointed out a few challenges, such as the limited public transport in Nicosia and issues with cleanliness. “After October, the summer season ends, and many flights are cancelled, making it harder to leave. Public transport in Nicosia is very bad; you literally have to hope the bus will arrive on time,” he explained.
“The more interesting the place, the more difficult it is to get there, act fast. Choose a place you genuinely want to explore, rather than following the recommendations of others. Difficulties are inevitable, but with the right mindset, you can always overcome them.”
