Coming from sunny Seville in the south of Spain, Nieves Ganghe Pedrós Chamorro chose Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Technology. Looking back at her four-year journey, she describes it as a life-changing experience, not only academically but also personally.
After completing her bachelor’s, Nieves has already applied for master’s studies at KTU. She hopes to continue being part of the community while also working in Lithuania during her studies.
Life in Lithuania: first impressions and changes
Connecting with both Lithuanian and international students brought Nieves countless opportunities to learn new cultures, traditions and create unforgettable memories. The most important lesson, she adds, was about people. “Being kind, compassionate, loving and merciful to one another. We are all humans with different issues and backgrounds, so do not judge others too harshly,” says KTU graduate.
Arriving in Lithuania for the first time, Nieves was impressed by the state-of-the-art facilities, and the variety of opportunities beyond studies. “The university offered not only excellent academic resources but also support systems, a gym, and programmes for professional and academic growth,” recalls Nieves.
As for Kaunas, the city immediately won her heart with its nature and tranquillity. “I loved how many parks and green spaces surround the city. It’s not very big, so you can easily move around, which makes life very comfortable,” she says.
Over time, she noticed how much both Kaunas and the university have changed: “Bus stops are being modernised, streets rebuilt, the Faculty of Chemical Technology reformed, and new facilities like M-LAB and the library have been built. Lithuania is clearly developing, and I believe in 10 years it will be one of the best European countries.”
Lessons learned and future goals
For Nieves, the passion and dedication of KTU professors stand out the most. “Their goal is for students to truly understand, rather than just study by heart. I also love how KTU relates theoretical knowledge to practical applications through laboratory works and lectures,” she says.
She also has advice for those just starting their studies: “Do not panic and be consistent, follow the teachers’ instructions and ask for help when you need it. Hard times are coming for sure, but so are many joyful moments with colleagues and teachers. The most important thing is to be happy doing whatever you decide, regardless of others’ opinions”.
Looking further ahead, she is determined to build her career in renewable energy.
“I would love to work on green hydrogen. I am very passionate about renewable energies. Lithuania is already signing contracts for buses running on green hydrogen, so this is a promising place to be,” points out Nieves, soon-to-be student again.
No matter where her career takes her, Nieves is confident about recommending KTU to others. “I always share my experience so people know the endless possibilities KTU offers. The teaching system links theory with practice, making it possible to truly understand the subject. And the lifestyle here is calm, surrounded by nature and a wonderful international community,” she says with a smile.
