On Thursday, 16 January at 7pm the sixth lecture from the Design Thursdays cycle will take place. Stefania Silvestri, General Secretary DesignLibrary Milan will deliver a seminar on the 60’s design, which is a part of the cycle “The Future in the Past”. The seminar will take place at DesignLibary Kaunas, at KTU Santaka Valley.
The sixties are marked as a complex of inter-related cultural and political trends across the globe. As a response to the political turmoil the arts and design in the 1960s were exploring the topics of free love, flower power and pop music. The previous decade’s love of American design was replaced, as Swinging London became the centre of all things groovy.
The 60’s were also important for Lithuanian design. Though the ideals of socialist planned economies were fundamentally different from the Western understanding of design, this did not mean that there was no design, or designers, to speak of. On the contrary, many events that were critically important for Soviet and Lithuanian design occurred in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including the establishment of new institutions, the launch of specialized study programs, the organizing of the first design exhibitions, and the evolution of concepts concerning the modernization of objects and environments.
“The aim of these lectures is not only history as such, but also the design icon’s importance for the public. When analysing history and various objects in it, we also talk about the things that can be transformed by people and adapted to the everyday life. About their influence to the future tendencies. One of the main goals of these seminars is to create relationship between past and future”, says Stefania Silvestri, who will deliver the lecture this Thursday.
She reminds that DesignLibrary is not a “library” as such, but rather a network of contacts, knowledge and culture, which joins together people and companies.
