Career launch pad for young people
Every year, the KTU Career Days attracts over 10,000 students, graduates and high school students. These three different audiences visit the event for different reasons. The Career Days’ aim is to help students and undergraduates learn about the job market and to help them make decisions. For senior and final year students, the University provides a one-stop shop for internships or jobs.
“The KTU Career Days is one of the opportunities for students to get to know a wide range of companies, to find out what kind of job or internship opportunities they offer, what kind of competences are needed for these positions, and to make their further choices based on this,” says Skučienė.
By attending a Career Days event in their first year of study, students can get interested in a specific company or area of activity, later, they can choose a career mentor from the area or look for work placements and volunteering opportunities.
“We encourage senior students to find out in detail about the seminars and trainings on career planning that are being organised before the Career Days and to participate actively in them. This helps strengthening their career planning skills and they can come to the Career Days meetings with companies prepared,” says the organiser of the largest career contact fair in the Baltics.
Today, it’s not uncommon to start your working career while still studying. Skučienė, the Director of the KTU Student Affairs Department, also notes that more and more students are choosing to study and work, but not necessarily for economic reasons. However, she emphasises that this is not an easy task.
“Successfully combining study and work, so that neither is compromised is not an easy task and requires a high level of student focus and strong organisational skills. It is therefore very important to have a career plan and to choose activities that contribute to that plan, develop specific qualities or build up experience that will be useful for post-graduation job searches,” Skučienė says.
Finding the balance is important for businesses, too
According to Jogilė Jagelavičiūtė, Project Manager for Cooperation Development at KTU, it is very important for companies to promote a healthy work-life balance. This ensures the well-being of employees, reduces stress and burnout, increases job satisfaction and ultimately – productivity and creativity.
