KTU WANTed Career Days 2023 encourages to seek balance

Important | 2023-09-26

The search for balance is an important part of our daily lives as this influences our productivity, creativity and motivation – both in our personal and career lives. From the smallest details of the day to life-changing decisions. For the nineteenth year, the KTU WANTed Career Days 2023 will invite over 10,000 participants to find a balanced job or internship for themselves. The event will take place on Thursday, October 19 at Žalgiris Arena.

According to Kristina Skučienė, Director of the Department of Student Affairs and one of the main organisers of the event, this year’s theme “Finding Balance” was chosen to remind us that balance is not an end goal in itself, but rather a process.

“We aim to raise and rethink the questions of why balance is needed, how to achieve it, when to start or stop looking for it, whether it is important, what benefits it brings, and what opportunities it opens,” says Skučienė.

The largest career planning event in the Baltics – KTU WANTed Career Days 2023 – will invite Lithuanian and international professionals from more than 140 companies to share their insights.

Three companies – Centric IT Solutions Lithuania, EPAM and Teltonika – became the main partners of the career days.

The event partnership is also supported by HELLA Lithuania, Continental, Litgrid, Swedbank, Vinted, Mars Lietuva, Ignitis grupė, Hollister Lietuva, Accenture Baltics, Littelfuse.

Career launch pad for young people

Every year, the KTU Career Days attracts over 10,000 students, graduates and high school students. These three different audiences visit the event for different reasons. The Career Days’ aim is to help students and undergraduates learn about the job market and to help them make decisions. For senior and final year students, the University provides a one-stop shop for internships or jobs.

“The KTU Career Days is one of the opportunities for students to get to know a wide range of companies, to find out what kind of job or internship opportunities they offer, what kind of competences are needed for these positions, and to make their further choices based on this,” says Skučienė.

By attending a Career Days event in their first year of study, students can get interested in a specific company or area of activity, later, they can choose a career mentor from the area or look for work placements and volunteering opportunities.

“We encourage senior students to find out in detail about the seminars and trainings on career planning that are being organised before the Career Days and to participate actively in them. This helps strengthening their career planning skills and they can come to the Career Days meetings with companies prepared,” says the organiser of the largest career contact fair in the Baltics.

Today, it’s not uncommon to start your working career while still studying. Skučienė, the Director of the KTU Student Affairs Department, also notes that more and more students are choosing to study and work, but not necessarily for economic reasons. However, she emphasises that this is not an easy task.

“Successfully combining study and work, so that neither is compromised is not an easy task and requires a high level of student focus and strong organisational skills. It is therefore very important to have a career plan and to choose activities that contribute to that plan, develop specific qualities or build up experience that will be useful for post-graduation job searches,” Skučienė says.

Finding the balance is important for businesses, too

According to Jogilė Jagelavičiūtė, Project Manager for Cooperation Development at KTU, it is very important for companies to promote a healthy work-life balance. This ensures the well-being of employees, reduces stress and burnout, increases job satisfaction and ultimately – productivity and creativity.

“When employees have time to relax and pursue their personal interests, they bring more energy and innovative ideas to the workplace, which leads to higher employee engagement and motivation. In addition, a focus on balance helps retain and attract talent, making companies more attractive to both current and future employees,” says Jagelavičiūtė.

The search for balance as a process from the perspective of companies will be also discussed at the KTU Career Days, as employers are interested in how to create and ensure a favourable environment for reconciling employees’ work and private life.

“At KTU WANTed Career Days 2023, representatives of companies will analyse how employers’ attitudes towards the benefits of work-life balance are changing, what measures they have tried, what impact these measures have had, and how they have changed the company,” says Jagelavičiūtė.

Also, according to Skučienė, representatives of companies will be invited to share their experiences on finding a balance in the distribution of responsibilities between employees of different genders, age groups and qualifications.

The number of WANTed Career Days activities is expanding

Visitors of the Career Days will be able to take part in a wide range of activities – the WANTed Meets WANTed contact zone is intended for getting to know companies, the specifics of their activities, and for leaving your contacts (digitally, via KTU’s job and internship advertisement platform). In the Inspiration Area, companies and social partners of the event will invite participants to get acquainted with innovations and participate in interactive activities.

This year’s expanded Make Your CV WANTed area will offer career advice, a CV photo shoot, opportunities to enhance your career by participating in study exchange programmes, ECIU University activities, or by joining activities organised by KTU Startup Space.

According to Jagelavičiūtė, this year’s annual KTU WANTed Career Days event promises to be more interesting and interactive than ever before, with an awards ceremony awaiting the participants.

According to the Cooperation Development Project Manager, there will be three different categories in which all participating companies will compete. Firstly, companies will be rewarded for the QR code scanned the most times, which shows their popularity and attractiveness among the student participants. Secondly, the event organisers will reward the company that has had the warmest interaction with students, underlining the importance of fostering meaningful relationships. Students will decide for themselves which company is the friendliest. Participants will also choose the most outstanding, i.e. the most attractive and interactive company stand.
