Annotation:

Repair of vehicles after car accidents currently lacks the respective passive safety norms and its assurance guidelines. Experience in post-accident maintenance and design of vehicles has shown that the essential damage during car rollover accidents is A-pillar deformation.
The paper provides description of the car roof support structure and puts forward calculation methodology for the A-pillar strength. The research has been aimed at assessing the arrangement of repair welds in the structure, analysing the influence of roof elements on the overall structural strength, and identifying the influence of difference between the weld and the materials of various mechanical characteristics used in the A-pillar structure on the A-pillar structural strength, using the LS-DYNA software.
Computational models of the car roof A-pillar materials and car A-pillar have been developed during the computational study. The results of load distribution among the structural elements of car roof, static and dynamic loads acting on the car roof structure and its A-pillar are provided in the paper.
The paper also presents the experimental studies of the structural materials of car roof and mechanical characteristics of its elements, discusses on the results obtained during action of static compressive load on the car roof structure, and identifies the most effective model of weld arrangement in the A-pillar.
