Whole-Cell Biosensors on Nanofibre Membranes – a New Integral Plaform for Researching Air Pollutant Cytotoxicity (AeroCellTox)

Project no.: 01.2.2-LMT-K-718-03-0089

Project description:

The idea of the proposed research project relies on the application of useful features of nanotechnology and nanomaterials for the development of conceptionally new methodology for testing cytotoxicity of air pollutants and other nanomaterials. Such approach fulfils the strategic aim of decoupling toxicology research from in vivo animal models by providing effective in vitro platform. Whole cell bio-sensors is among the most promising methods for toxicological testing and research, allowing the determination of nanoparticle toxicity based on physiological response of cells to external stimulation and obtaining a more comprehensive information about the toxicological mechanism of certain material. AeroCellTox project will develop a novel approach that we call “cell-on-particles”, which merges particle collection and cell cultivation steps by using a single nanofibrous substrate for both particle collection and subsequent cultivation of cells on the same substrate. Thus, this method is expected to be more representative, faster and less expensive.

Project funding:

This research project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments, under measure’s No. 01.2.2-LMT-K-718 activity “Research Projects Implemented by World-class Researcher Groups to develop R&D activities relevant to economic sectors, which could later be commercialized”.

Project results:

The key physical product of the project is polymeric nanofibrous membrane, which will be used both as aerosol particle collection substrate and cell/biosensor cultivation substrate. Such concept is new and is not described in scientific literature or patents.
