The synthesis and application of mayenite

Project no.: 09.3.3-LMT-K-712-02-0188

Project description:

In this project it is intended to create an economically attractive synthesis technology for obtaining mayenite, which will combine the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium hydroaluminates and additional solid-state sintering, during which mayenite will be formed due to the dehydration of calcium hydroaliuminates (350-450oC): in order to achieve this goal, the optimal conditions for the hydrothermal synthesis and the composition of the dry raw materials mixture will be chosen. The obtained products will be used in the production of calcium aluminate cements (this will reduce their cost) and will stabilize heavy metals and organic pollutants in the cement samples. The proposed synthesis technology will allow to achieve a complex effect: the energy consumption and CO2 emission, during the production, will be reduced, and the obtained mayenite will have a higher specific surface, which will result in the elimination of additional grinding during production. By implementing the project, it is intended to go for the internships in Technical University of Kosice and Brno University of Technology, for this reason, an active cooperation between institutions will be maintained. They have gained an extensive experience in the field of mobilization and utilization of contaminants, and in the research area of calcium aluminate additives in cement hydration.

Project funding:

This research project is funded by the European Social Fund according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments, under measure’s No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712 activity “Promotion of postdoctoral fellowships studies”.

Project results:

The idea of this project is to create an environmentally friendly and economically attractive mayenite synthesis technology and to propose its perspective application fields. This idea will be implemented, when the following intended results will be reached during this project: 1. the energy consumption and CO2 emission during production will be reduced; 2. the additional grinding of mayenite during production will be eliminated; 3. the heavy metals and organic contaminants, which are found in sewage sludge, will be immobilized in binding materials; 4. the calcium aluminate cement products will be improved.
