Research and development of innovative non-invasive high temporal resolution intracranial pressure waves monitoring technology

Project no.: S-MIP-23-68

Project description:

The yearly incidence of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is approximately 69 million individuals worldwide. TBI new cases from 100-330 for 100 000 population happen every year. It is one of the major causes of death and disability and huge direct and indirect costs to the health system and the society. Intracranial pressure waveform contains valuable information about the nature of cerebrospinal pathophysiology – cerebral hypoperfusion or hyper-perfusion, potentially resulting in secondary brain ischemia or hyperemia. These two situations occur in a wide range of conditions including stroke, carotid artery stenosis, anesthesia induced hypotension, circulatory arrest, etc. The non-invasive intracranial pressure waveform monitoring technology could be the missing link in the care of a much wider patients’ group than just TBI victims. The idea of this project is that parameters derived from morphologies of intracranial pressure waves may open novel avenues for patient-specific treatments according to individualized and precise medicine concept. Multimodal bedside monitoring of intracranial waves could improve the outcome of each patient. Therefore, patient specific ischemic and hyperemic events can be identified in a timely manner while automatic and fast management of arterial blood pressure and cerebral blood flow autoregulation can be used to minimize further secondary neurologic injury.
