Removal of alkyl parabens from aqueous media by using biopolymer sorbents

Project no.: 09.3.3-LMT-K-712-25-0109

Project description:

Alkyl parabens are used as preservatives in various cosmetics. With the rapid increase in the use of cosmetics in recent years, the concentration of their residues in soil, surface water, groundwater is increasing and poses a threat to human health and other living organisms. The aim of this project is to develop new biopolymer sorbents for the removal of alkyl parabens from aqueous media.

Project funding:

Project is funded by EU Structural Funds according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments priority “Development of scientific competence of researchers, other researchers, students through practical scientific activities” under Measure No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712.

Project results:

By chemical modification of native starch microgranules new sorbents based on modified biopolymers and their synthesis technology will be developed. The interactions between biopolymer sorbents of various composition and structure and alkylparabens in water will be studied, and the effectiveness of such sorbents in removing parabens from aqueous media, their regeneration possibilities will be evaluated. The young researcher participating in the project will gain new competencies in the synthesis, research and applications of biopolymers.
