Multimodal system for personalized post stroke rehabilitation (StrokeRehab)

Project no.: J05-LVPA-K-04-0025

Project description:

The project is designed to create a new product and related technologies – an integrated multimodal (merging diverse data: from heart rhythm to hand movements, brain neurological activity, and visual feedback) system for personalized post-stroke rehabilitation. This system will enable patients who have suffered a stroke to perform personalized rehabilitation using gamificated physical exercises. Personalization will be implemented by feedback of biosignals of brain activity, cardiovascular system and movements. The hardware and software parts of the rehabilitation system will be adapted to the patient’s condition and personal needs.
The project is being implemented by the biomedical engineering center UAB GRUPPO FOS LITHUANIA, established by the Italian high-tech company Gruppo Fos, together with Kaunas University of Technology and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.

Project funding:

This research project is funded by European Regional Development Fund according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments under measure No. J05-LVPA-K “Intellect. Joint Science-Business Projects”

Project results:

The system is composed of two parts: hardware and software. Hardware includes physiological parameters sensors: heart rate, motion tracking, neurological activity (electroencephalographic and/or functional near infrared) sensors, and virtual/augmented reality glasses. The software include: physiological signal processing and parameterization algorithms, personalized rehabilitation models, and rehabilitation program formation/feedback gaming solutions. The doctor, after evaluating the post-stroke state of the patient, set ups a personalized rehabilitation program with the rehabilitation specialist, which defines the system configuration (both hardware and software). By performing a prescribed rehabilitation program, the patient performs physical exercises with the help of a feedback, which is formed according to the parameters of the physiological sensor signals. The patient’s efforts and progress are also recorded on the data server. The medical staff is monitoring the rehabilitation process according to the sensors data.
