The present lighting systems currently consisting mostly of fluorescent tubes, light-emitting diodes and incandescent bulbs do not meet the criteria of providing a human-friendly lighting system after sunset as almost all the commercial devices have blue light in their spectrum. Further, this pandemic has accelerated the transition towards an online economy, which has increased the indoor time spent by people in the blue light enriched lighting sources which can exaggerate the risk of cancers, diabetes and eyes diseases. These have mostly led to calls from various national health agencies, universities and scientists to develop a blue hazard-free lighting source. In scientific level there are just few examples of omni-friendly candlelight organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), which emit blue-hazard free light which is human-friendly and eco-friendly. Therefore, the development of high-efficiency candlelight OLED lighting is an important requirement due to their significant role in human’s health and the environment.
Project funding:
Projects funded by the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL), Projects carried out by researchers’ teams
Project results:
The scientific work would enable us for furthering the technology from the technology readiness level (TRL) 2 toward TRL4. Precisely, we plan to achieve in 3 years the omni-friendly candlelight OLEDs with a colour temperature from 1400K to 2000K, an 80000 hours reaching lifetime, a greater than 50 folds maximum permissible exposure (MPE) and a better than 10 folds melatonin suppression sensitivity.
Period of project implementation: 2022-04-01 - 2025-03-31
Project coordinator: Kaunas University of Technology
