GN4-2 Research and Education Networking – GEANT (GN4-2)

Project no.: 731122

Project description:

The GÉANT Project has grown during its iterations (GN1, GN2, GN3, GN3plus, GN4-1) to incorporate not just the award-winning 500Gbps pan-European network, but also a catalogue of advanced, user-focused services, and a successful programme of innovation that is pushing the boundaries of networking technology to deliver real impact to over 50 million users.
The GÉANT network provides the high speed connectivity needed to share, access and process the massive volumes of data. This data is generated by, and essential to, diverse research and education communities across such areas as particle physics, bioinformatics, earth observation, drug discovery, and arts and culture.
The project partners work together to provide network connectivity and to collaborate on joint research activities, investing in the development and delivery of an advanced portfolio of services, tools and network capabilities to institutions, projects and researchers.
The GÉANT Project is a truly pan-European collaboration between 40 partners:
38 European NRENs;
NORDUnet (representing the five Nordic countries);
GÉANT Limited (Project Coordinator) and GÉANT Association.

Project funding:

The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation “Horizon 2020”

Project results:

The overall FPA objective for the GÉANT Partnership is to contribute to the effective European research
enterprise by making Europe the best-connected region in the world. GÉANT must offer European researchers the network, communications facilities and application access that ensure the digital continuum necessary to
allow them to conduct world-class research in collaboration with their peers around the world.
The FPA defines a number of more detailed objectives to achieve this. These are addressed by GN4-2 as
effectively as possible, given the financial and time constraints of the project. The overall impacts planned by GN4-2 include:
• By 2020, GÉANT is the European Communications Commons, where talent anywhere is able to collaborate with peers around the world and have instantaneous and unlimited access to any resource for knowledge creation, innovation and learning, unconstrained by the barriers of the pre-digital and the present digital world.
• Europe is the worldwide hub for research networking excellence.
• The digital divide across Europe is decreased.
