The project aims to develop a pilot industrial symbiosis model for a selected industrial waste stream in Lithuania by integrating wood industry residues (sawdust and wood chips) into the production of construction materials. The research will analyse waste flows, evaluate their technological suitability, and develop an industrial symbiosis model that promotes the efficient use of secondary raw materials. Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the environmental benefits of the proposed solution will be quantified, including reductions in CO? emissions, energy consumption, and the use of virgin raw materials. The project will contribute to the implementation of circular economy principles and the development of sustainable industrial practices in Lithuania.
Project results:
The project will deliver a pilot industrial symbiosis model for the utilisation of wood industry waste in the production of construction materials. The environmental performance of the proposed solution will be assessed, and material flow diagrams together with practical recommendations for industry will be prepared. The expected outcomes include quantified potential for reducing CO? emissions, lowering energy consumption, and saving virgin raw materials, thereby supporting more efficient resource use and the transition towards a circular economy.
