Developing a methodology and recommendations for assessing the impact of AI technologies on sustainable, healthy and smart food ecosystems

Project no.: SV3-115

Project description:

The research will provide a platform and methodology for assessing the progress and maturity of the food ecosystem in its different parts (primary production, processing, distribution and marketing, consumption and waste management). Based on scientific sources and experience, it will identify the criteria needed to determine the level of maturity in the areas of sustainability, health-friendliness and digitalisation/artificial intelligence, and will create a platform for companies to assess their level of maturity in the areas of sustainability, health-friendliness and digitalisation. The analysis of the collected data will lead to the development of an empirical model that will allow aggregating data at the level of different enterprises into a common numerical expression that will assess the sustainability, health-friendliness and the level of digitalisation/artificial intelligence deployment in the Lithuanian food ecosystem, as well as the main barriers to its effective integration in the food ecosystem.

Project funding:

The project is funded by the state budget according to the Rules on the Financing of Research and Experimental Development in Agriculture, Food and Fisheries 2023-2027

Project results:

The project will identify criteria/factors and develop a methodology to determine the level of sustainability, health-friendliness and digitalisation/artificial intelligence maturity of the food system. Such a multi-criteria model, including criteria and quantification of the level of progress in the three dimensions (sustainability, health and digitalisation/artificial intelligence), will allow to assess the current situation of the country’s food ecosystem, the level of digitalisation/artificial intelligence deployment and targeting, and to identify the main barriers and challenges to their effective integration in the development of a sustainable, health-friendly and intelligent food ecosystem. The uniqueness of the model being developed lies in the cohesion of the three dimensions (sustainability, health and digitalisation/ AI), as the use of IoT technologies, and the new solutions being developed, need to be aligned with sustainability objectives, while effective approaches to achieving sustainability objectives increasingly require the incorporation of data analysis and IoT algorithms (e.g. forecasting).
