Comparative empirical research of dynamic capabilities of Remote Patient Management (RPM) services and disruptive innovations in healthcare ecosystem

Project no.: 09.3.3-LMT-K-712-01-0193

Project description:

Remote patient management (RPM) is a disruptive and enabling innovation based on digital and remote technologies that improve care management of persons with chronic diseases including elderly people at the same time reducing spending on chronical diseases and aging. However, Healthcare sector all around the world proved to be slow in innovating core processes, financial models and patients’ experience, leading to the assumption that Healthcare ecosystem is slow in developing dynamic capabilities. Thus, the research question of the project is: when and how to develop dynamic capabilities of RPM service in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of the Healthcare ecosystem; The research aim is: to assess DC of the RPM service and its impact on Healthcare ecosystem ability to absorb disruptive innovations and in that way improve Healthcare ecosystem quality and effectiveness. Objectives of the research: to adapt DC framework in order to assess the gap of the capabilities needed to absorb disruptive innovations in Healthcare ecosystem; to assess current knowledge on value created by enabling technologies and RPM service; to develop a conceptual model on how to increase DC of RPM service and its impact on Healthcare ecosystem ability to absorb disruptive innovations; to test conceptual model; to develop a viable model of RMP services imbedded into the Healthcare ecosystem; to set guidelines for future research as well as recommendations for the Healthcare policy makers. Testing of the conceptual model is based on mixed research methods, employing comparative case studies research for developing conceptual model and survey for testing the model. Research results enable to review and advance national goals of improved quality and effectiveness of the Healthcare system.

Project funding:

This research project is funded by the European Social Fund according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments under measure’s No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712 activity “Improvement of Researchers’ Qualification by Implementing World-class R&D Projects”.

Project results:

Project outcomes will significantly enhance research literature with new applications of dynamic capabilities research and in particular in fostering the ability of Healthcare ecosystem to absorb disruptive innovations, such as RPM services based on enabling technologies. It is planned that the project will produce following research production: prepared comparative case study (performed in USA, Spain and Lithuania) research report providing detailed description of case study research methodology; prepared six conference proposals for the top international scientific conferences (e.g. SMS, AOM, EURAM, BAM, EGOS and similar) and attendance with presentation on the research findings; held three short term internships where selected researchers will join Spanish and USA research teams for relevant case study research activities. prepared and submitted four research paper manuscripts to the top international scientific journals within the field; prepared survey report providing detailed description on the survey methodology and research results; guest edited special issue of the international scientific journal on the dynamic capabilities of the RPM services fostering disruptive innovations in Healthcare ecosystem. The special issue will call together best research groups across the Europe and beyond to share their research results in the field and in that way validating proposed research methodology and avoiding overlaps; prepared and submitted project application under the program of H2020; organized international scientific workshop held on the topic of the research project. Also, research results will have clear managerial implications by proposing when and, how healthcare ecosystem stakeholders might increase Healthcare quality and efficiency by adopting RMP services based on enabling technologies.
