Recently, there has been a strong demand in Lithuania and worldwide for new cosmetic and personal care products containing natural plant extracts. Plant extracts containing phytochemicals are known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antidepressant, antidiabetic and anticancer effects. These plant extracts are used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries. Superoxide dismutase, L-proline, phenolic acids, polyphenols, flavonoids and carotenoids are free radical scavengers and are used in a variety of cosmetic products. Plant biotechnology is an alternative and sustainable tool for extracting bioactive ingredients from natural sources. Green biotechnology techniques can be used to grow plants under sterile conditions, to establish callus and suspension cultures in vitro, to prepare natural extracts and to test the concentrations of bioactive phytochemicals. It is well known that the commercial relevance of a new cosmetic product depends on the concentrations and bioactivity of bioactive compounds, so this project will aim to optimise the accumulation of secondary metabolites using sustainable green biotechnology methods.
The aim of the project will be to develop new cosmetic products using plant cell extracts obtained by biotechnological methods.
Project results:
Plant callus cultures will be developed using biotechnological methods, bioactive compounds will be identified, antioxidant properties will be tested and new cosmetic products will be developed.
Period of project implementation: 2024-10-01 - 2025-04-30
