Additive manufactured composite smart structures with embedded fibre Bragg grating sensors (AMCSS)

Project no.: project7147

Project description:

The project specific innovation objectives and results are related to the development of high performance composites – additive manufactured (AM) carbon/ glass fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP/ GFRP) with embedded fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. FBG sensors advantages (small dimensions and weight, high multiplexing capabilities) allow them to be embedded into structures without influence on the material durability. It allows development of structural health monitoring (SHM) system increasing the safety of AM structures recently very popular in many industrial branches. Impact and potential benefits are related to developing method of manufacturing high strength performance composite materials with embedded FBG sensors. Such approach combines in one advantages of AM (limited waste, elements with complex shape) and SHM system (safety, information about real loading conditions). Such method can be apply for manufacturing of different elements in e.g. marine, civil engineering structure.

Project funding:

ERA-NET and other coordination measures

Project results:

The main expected result of the project is to develop AM method for CFRP/ GFRP materials that will be validated in laboratory conditions and can be in future implemented in the automatic manufacturing process in a composite manufacturing company. Additionally information related to embedded fibre optic influences on material durability and structure as well as models describing such phenomena will be achieved.
