Adaptive individualized balance seat controlled by feedback of trunk muscles activity

Project no.: TPP-04-098

Project description:

According to statistics, about 39% of people in Europe have a sedentary job. Long sitting positions at work increase lower back pain. Therefore, it is proposed to replace the usual work chair with an innovation created during the project, an adaptive individualized balance seat, controlled by the feedback of the trunk muscle activity. An additional uniqueness of the adaptive individualized seat is more active movements of the human pelvis, which reduce back pain, in addition, a safe amplitude of movement is adjusted for each person individually, selected according to muscle activity. The project would help to reach the TRL7 stage, i.e. to create and test a prototype under real conditions.

Project funding:

The state budget of the Republic of Lithuania

Project results:

The project’s purpose is to develop an adaptive, individualized balance seat, controlled by feedback activity of the trunk muscles, for the health and productivity improvement of people working in a sedentary job (TRL7). To achieve this result, the following tasks will be performed; (1) Development of a controlled seat instability level mechanism; (2) Modernize the automated position control of the adaptive personalized seat; (3) Computational biomechanical modeling of sitting on an adaptive personalized seat based on muscle activity and kinematic parameters; (4) Create a prototype of an adaptive personalized seat, including its design; (5) Test the prototype of the adaptive personalized seat in real conditions.
