Jurgis Vilemas

Jurgis Vilemas (Republic of Lithuania) – Professor, engineer of nuclear energy, long-standing head of the Lithuanian Energy Institute, full member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

The main area of the professor’s scientific work – research of the thermal and hydrodynamic processes in the nuclear reactors of various types and purposes and analysis with related fundamental hydro and gas patterns, problems of the safety of nuclear power plants.

He devoted the main part of his scientific and organisational activities to the issues of the Lithuanian energy policy, economy and safety since 1991. He led and actively participated in implementation of the scientific research programmes required for preparation of the Lithuanian energy strategies.

In 1994-1997, he was the member of the committee for safety of Ignalina NPP. He was the leader of the Consultative Committee for the Lithuanian Nuclear Safety, established by the Government of Lithuania, in 1993-2008. He was the chairman of the board of the company “Lietuvos Energija” in 2000-2008, and advisor for energy issues of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania (on a voluntary basis) in 1993-2007.

J. Vilemas was awarded the 3 class Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas; he is the winner of the Lithuanian National Science Premium, winner of the Academic A. Žukauskas Prize.

The title of Honorary Doctor was awarded for the merits to the Lithuanian science.
