Annotation: The dissertation ” Leader-induced career shock for an employee’s sustainable career” reveals the phenomenon of career shock in the context of a sustainable career, and demonstrates the importance of leader’s behaviour by showing how leader’s behaviour, through its impact on the elements of the employee’s socio-psychological experience (status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness), induces a career shock that is manifested in an employee’s sustainable career. The main parts of the dissertation are: (1) Drawing on the perspectives of career shock researchers, the research carried out and the results revealed, a theoretical framework for the theoretical explanation of leader-induced career shock in the employee’s sustained career is developed, revealing the main concepts; (2) The methodology of the empirical study of leader-induced career shock in the sustainable career of an employee has been developed , the interpretivism philosophy has been chosen and justified, the study is constructed by applying the abductive approach, the monomethod research has been chosen, where the data is collected and analyzed and the conclusions are drawn by implementing the qualitative research, the data collection method has been applied – individual semi-structured interview, the data analysis method has been applied – the method of qualitative content analysis; (3) An empirical study of leader-induced career shock on employee career sustainability was implemented, which revealed the manifestation of leader-induced career shock on employee career sustainability by affecting elements of the employee’s socio-psychological experience, and provided a summary of the results of the empirical study, highlighting the scientific debate, limitations of the study, directions for future research, and recommendations. The dissertation formulates recommendations for leaders, human resource professionals and employees on how to anticipate an employee’s likely career shock, what leader’s behaviour would help to avoid or manage career shock, how to mitigate the negative consequences of a career shock, and how to enable the positive consequences, both proximal and distal, through the impact on the employee’s socio-psychological experience.
