Traditionally ‘Career development’ means upward promotion. However, organisations are flatter and leaner, new roles and specialisms are entering the market making conventional career planning harder to do. Career growth is now defined by lateral moves, job rotation, shadowing others, secondments and special projects. It is more about enhancing the role that you are in, rather than looking for a new job title. This means that individuals are required to take accountability for their own career; they are required to shape and drive the development that they want.“
