Annotation: Today, more than ever, the organizations go through significant transformation. Organizations, particularly multinationals, must adapt to the ever-changing economic landscape, including shifting market needs, globalization, and the need for new knowledge. In this context, the development and implementation of the open innovation paradigm in business practice provides specific challenges related not only to the management of the external environment, but also to the development of organizational capabilities that would specifically prepare the organization to operate in open innovation networks, and, more importantly, to successfully integrate external knowledge flows into the innovation process. Multinational corporations could achieve more success by involving internal or global business units in innovation generation, which would then become more effective participants in the national innovation ecosystem in localized markets. Organizational capabilities are the most crucial factor in fostering open innovation in businesses, however opinions differ on the specific skills required. When responding to this topic, focus should be placed on environmental scanning, innovation commercialization, building a network of external partners and partnerships, employee commitment and internal processes. As a result, the Open Innovation Capability Maturity Model (OI-CMM) would make it possible to evaluate the organization’s current state, make improvements, and create recommendations for how to strengthen open innovation capabilities.
