Human and More-Than-Human Futures: Innovating Technologies for Coexistence

Conference

This interdisciplinary conference is an unconventional and one of the most important events of the year whose goal is to understand complex technologies.

Human and More-Than-Human Futures: Innovating Technologies for Coexistence will bring together Lithuanian and MIT scientists, as well as representatives from Lithuanian business and industry, to discuss the challenges of technological transformations. The discussions will cover today’s most relevant issues associated with quantum technologies, resilient cities, energy, biotechnology, education, and other fields.

Participants will share knowledge and explore ways to create a better future in which people, technology, and nature coexist harmoniously.

The main focus will be on new ideas for transitioning from merely smart technologies to systems that are sensory and self-learning. In other words, methods will be sought on how to develop technologies that not only follow commands but also adapt to humans and consider their environment, with humans still remaining the key creators and users.

In the world we live in, under the conditions of rapidly increasing technological transformations and upheavals, what remains essential is the human pursuit of stability in the face of uncertainty. Even though anxiety about the future forces us to seek clear individual guidelines, real progress lies in the collective development of resilient paths, rather than in strict adherence to pre-determined directions or responses.

The conference is organised by the Consortium of 12 major Lithuanian universities, research centers, and companies, coordinated by Vytautas Magnus University (VMU). The event has been made possible by an agreement with MIT’s Center for International Studies and MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI).

Participants of the conference:

  • Scientists of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA)
  • Lithuania’s scientists, business and industry leaders
  • Experts of diverse fields and everyone who cares about the future intertwining of technology and nature

Session topics:

  •  From Sensing to Resilience: Building Livable Cities for Human and More-Than-Human Futures
  •  Factories of the Future: From Quantum Precision to Advanced Materials
  •  Harnessing Synthetic Biology and Genomics for Biological Responses to Climate Change and Future Health
  •  Navigating Generative AI for Innovation and Responsible Growth
  •  Unlocking Minds: How New Pedagogies and AI are Transforming Lifelong Learning
  •  Cyber Defense and Building Trust in Intelligent Systems

The conference Human and More-Than-Human Futures: Innovating Technologies for Coexistence is open to everyone.

The detailed programe and list of speakers will be announced soon.

MIT is a recognised leader in science and innovation. The university’s alumni and staff include over 100 Nobel laureates, more than 80 MacArthur Fellows, about 20 Turing Award winners, and many other award recipients. In fiscal year 2024, MIT researchers filed over 600 new U.S. patents and formed over 20 companies using MIT intellectual property.

MIT MISTI Lithuania is a strategic partnership established between the Lithuanian consortium of science and business and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
