Rymantas Jonas Kažys

Rymantas Jonas Kažys (Lithuania) – Professor, Habilitated Doctor of Science in Technology.

R. J. Kažys was leading KTU (former KPI) Department of Theoretical Radiotechnics in 1982–1991; he was scientific supervisor of the Laboratory of Ultrasonic Measurements from 1991; Vice-Rector for Research in 2007–2011.

In 1996–2016, Kažys was the director of Professor Kazimieras Baršauskas Ultrasound Research Centre later reformed into Professor Kazimieras Baršauskas Ultrasound Research Institute.

The main areas of the renowned scientists’ research are ultrasonic measurements and non-destructive testing, methods and systems of ultrasonic technical and medical diagnostics, digital processing of ultrasonic signals and fields, and computer simulation. He examined the characteristics of the ultrasonic wave motion in various environments.

The results of Professor Kažys research were used for development of ultrasonic systems of measurement, visualisation and diagnostics operating in industrial and extreme conditions, ultrasonic devices for thermal energy accounting, as well as precise ultrasonic medical biometry and diagnostics.

R. J. Kažys is an author of more than 100 inventions (some of them are patented in the USA, Canada, and Sweden), more than 250 scientific papers, 2 monographs and 2 textbooks.

Under his leadership, the automated method for measurement of nuclear reactor fuel channels was created for the first time in the world; it was introduced at Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. For this work, R. J. Kažys was awarded the Prize of Professor Kazimieras Baršauskas by the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in 1994.

Professor Kažys was the chief editor of the journal “Ultragarsas” in 1996–2012; he is the member of the advisory council of the Great Britain’s journal “Insight”, reviewer of various international journals. He is invited to foreign universities as an opponent in the defence of the doctoral dissertations.

He was awarded the Lithuanian Science and Technology Prize in 1975, the Lithuanian Science Prize in 2000, the Cross of the Knight “For the Merits to Lithuania” in 2005, and the Officer of the Order of the Crown (Belgium) in 2006.
