Juozas Rimvydas Vaišnys

Juozas Rimvydas Vaišnys (United States of America) is a professor of Yale University, conducted research in chemistry, biology, mineralogy, physics and other fields of science, specialist of the modelling of super-complex systems.

At the age of fifteen, J. R. Vaišnys received a scholarship and was admitted to Yale University, where he acquired Bachelor’s degree. Later he continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he defended his Doctoral degree in chemistry science in 1960. In 1959, he was invited to work as a lecturer at Yale University.

While working at Yale University Vaišnys did not devote solely to the field of chemistry – he conducted scientific research in biology, mineralogy, physics and other fields of science; he became a specialist in the modelling of super-complex systems; conducted research in cooperation with anthropologists. Professor Vaišnys also conducted scientific work at Illinois University and Max-Planck Institute in Germany, as well as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory that is a branch of NASA, California.

The title of Honorary Doctor was awarded for the following merits to the University:

  • In 1988, J. R. Vaišnys was the first American, who came to teach at KTU with the invitation of professor Jurgis Staniškis. Since then, professor came to Lithuania for teaching and research several times per year.
  • Professor Vaišnys gave lectures to the students and post-graduates of the former Faculty of Automation; he was the member of KTU Senate, donated valuable publications to the KTU Library.
  • J. R. Vaišnys invited the former students of Yale University to teach at KTU: Emilie Beeler and Astrid Nolte, who taught English language in KTU in the autumn semester of 1991.
