The dissertation investigates the development and application of PVA-based colour-changing polymer composite films for ionizing radiation detection. Three film systems were fabricated and evaluated: PVA–dye composites for low-dose indication, silver-modified PVA films for the analysis of radiation-induced optical changes, and Ag–PVA–dye composites combining dye bleaching with the formation of silver-related nanostructures.

This dissertation addresses the problem of subjective human embryo quality assessment during in vitro fertilization (IVF). Current clinical practice relies on single-focal-plane images, resulting in the loss of spatial biological information. Furthermore, existing artificial intelligence (AI) models operate as uninterpretable systems, limiting their clinical adoption.

In this doctoral dissertation, the direct horizontal synthesis of graphene on catalytic-free substrates (Si, SiO₂, Al₂O₃(0001), and h-BN/SiO₂) commonly used in microelectronics and optoelectronics is investigated using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MW-PECVD). A steel protective cap was successfully implemented in this work to reduce the undesirable plasma effects on the substrate and the growing film.

Government institutions increasingly face complex policy problems. However, traditional performance management systems were largely designed for stable environments and often emphasize predictability and controllability of change. This dissertation studies what governance mechanisms for collaboration can be integrated into performance management to strengthen the capacity of government institutions to address complex public policy problems.

The dissertation addresses one of the most pressing challenges in cybersecurity: how to ensure not only high accuracy in cyberattack detection, but also the explainability and reliability of the artificial intelligence (AI) solutions employed when working with high-dimensional and imbalanced network traffic data. Although deep learning methods demonstrate high classification accuracy, their practical application in critical infrastructure is limited by the “black-box” nature of their operation.

The Internet of Things is one of the fastest growing branches of computer science, which integrates more and more devices into the global network. Device configuration in Internet of Things systems (IoT) is becoming increasingly difficult to manage, especially as the number of devices in the systems increases. Traditional IoT management methods often require specialized knowledge, and configuration can be error-prone, especially when it is necessary to adapt smart home systems to individual scenarios.

This dissertation addresses key limitations of conventional lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) biosensors, particularly their limited sensitivity and lack of quantitative capability. The work proposes a comprehensive framework for improving point-of-care diagnostics through the integration of three advanced approaches: photophysical nanomaterial synthesis, laser-assisted microfluidic control, and machine learning.

The dissertation investigates the heat and mass transfer processes occurring within a droplet of a pure liquid. A thorough understanding of these processes is a fundamental prerequisite for the development of liquid dispersion technologies in the industrial, transport, and energy sectors. At the current stage of technology, dominated by powerful electronics and high-efficiency energy conversion, large amounts of heat are accumulated in relatively small spaces. To ensure the efficient and proper operation of these devices, relatively low-temperature spray cooling becomes essential.

OTHERWISE explores design as a dynamic and critical element in shaping the present toward alternative futures. It challenges the assumption that design merely “provides solutions,” emphasizing instead its deeper role: to question, to imagine otherwise, and to critically assess the consequences of every choice – including the choice not to design. The exhibition unfolds around […]

Digital textual information is growing at a rapid pace. Effective automatic methods for understanding and processing such information are required, typically relying on the transformation of text into numerical representations. The emergence of Transformer-based models has created new challenges and opportunities for obtaining such representations.
